#3: Shahrukh Khan

shahrukh khan

Moroccans adore Shahrukh Khan. Granted, the actor is Indian and most of his films are in a language Moroccans don’t understand, but that doesn’t matter one bit. In fact, many Moroccans, with their inherent knack for language learning, have picked up a few words in Hindi simply because they’ve watched so many Bollywood flicks.

One interesting note is that in Arabic, kh denotes a sort of hacking sound (not all that different from the Spanish “j”), so Moroccans tend to pronounce Shahrukh Khan’s name a little differently.

One thing Moroccans really enjoy is hanging out at McDonald’s (or McDo, as francophones call it).  Although this is mostly a pastime of teenage Moroccans, on a Saturday night Moroccans of all ages stop by for their menu and enjoy it at the outdoor tables.

Young Moroccan men get all dressed up on Saturday night, spray on as much cologne as possible, then pick up their date (dressed to the nines, of course, complete with stiletto heels) and head to McDonald’s, where the young man buys his girl a sundae and they sit outside for hours admiring the other kids in their Saturday night best.

McDo a Marrakech

This Marrakech McDonald’s is a popular hangout.

It’s probably fair to mention that McDonald’s in Morocco is cleaner, has better tasting food, and widescreen televisions.  But that still doesn’t really explain it.

If there’s one thing Moroccans truly enjoy, it’s posing for photographs in front of cars, particularly cars that do not belong to them.

In general, Moroccans love to take photographs of themselves. A Moroccan on vacation may very well ask you to take his photograph – one, two, twenty times, to ensure you get the proper angle. He may also simply take his own picture of himself – arm extended, head at a funny angle. MySpace is full of such photographs.

When a Moroccan decides to take a photograph with a car, the car must be high end, something rare to Morocco (if he’s based in Morocco) like a BMW or Rolls Royce. He must pose with the car as if it were his own, even leaning on the car if possible, though in recent years, this practice has become rare given the high number of car alarm systems.

Another great example can be found here.
